The purpose of Nā Maka Hāloa 501(c)3 non-profit organization is to preserve and restore the indigenous Hawaiian culture, farming traditions, fishing practices and hula.
Nā Maka Hāloa supports Hawaiian programs in Puna, and serves as a foundation on which our programs can build on.
Papahānaumoku; the female, Wākea the male are the primordial gods of the earth and sky. It was they who parented the islands. The eldest of the island children being Hawaii, the second, Maui. Molokaʻi the third followed by Lānaʻi. Oʻahu was born, Kauaʻi was the last born of the island children. Papa then had a child by Wākea named Hāloa. The child was stillborn and buried. Out of the place where he was buried grew the Kalo plant and therefore became the food sustenance for the people of Hawaiʻi. Papa and Wākea then had another child who lived and they called him Hāloanakakalaukapalili- meaning The long breath of the fluttering leaf.
Nā Maka means the shoots or the first eyes that come from the newly spouting taro. Hāloa denotes long breath or long life. Nā Maka Hāloa are caregivers who, through indigenous Hawaiian cultural spirituality and practices will facilitate the healing restorative process of our people and our land so that Hāloa will live for many generations to come.
Edward Kanahele was a History professor at Hawaii Community College where he was able to tap into the young Hawaii youth coming into the college and inspire them to be great.
He was active in the preservation of ancient burial grounds and remains for the iwi kūpuna.
In 1990 he founded a group named "Hui Malama i Na Kupuna" which was established to protect remains and burial sites of Hawaiian ancestors.
This group was instrumental in getting the Smithsonian Institute to return the remains of 85 Hawaiians remains (bones) which had been kept for almost 100 years.
In 1998, our founder Edward Kanahele thought to regenerate the practices of Ocean through Lawaiʻa, Land through Mahiʻai and the chants and dances through Hula. This has been the foundation for Nā Maka Hāloa and continues to hold a solid foundation for us now and into the future. I Ola Hāloa!
